New Jersey's wayward dolphins head to sea, then turn back to river sanctuary

The survivors of a group of dolphins living in a New Jersey river have returned after briefly heading toward the sea.

Three of the five dolphins returned to the Shrewsbury River after they were spotted Saturday in Sandy Hook Bay.

The Marine Mammal Stranding Centre says they were apparently frightened by construction noise near the bay.

Four dolphins tried to cross again Sunday but turned back, although it wasn't clear why.

Three dolphins had been confirmed dead out of the original group of 16 that spent the summer and fall in the Shrewsbury and Navesink rivers. Authorities don't know what happened to the others.

Animal rescuers are fighting with federal wildlife officials over whether to remove the dolphins.

This reminds me of a recipe that I just read about. Here, for all you gourmets:

Elephant Stew
1 elephant
50/lbs potatos
50/lbs carrots
75/lbs red onions
75/lbs green peas
12 rabbits
1/4/lb cumin
1/box salt
1/canister pepper
2/jars bar leaf
6/bottles worstershire sauce
Skin elephant and cut into 1 inch chunks (this will take about 4 months)
boil elephant pieces in 200/gals water with cumin, bay leaf and salt and pepper until tender (about 5 months)
add potatos, carrots, onion, and peas and worstershire sauce. cook on low fire for 2 days.
Serves 2 tribes - if you are feeding more than 2 tribes add 12 rabbits, but only if needed because people do not like to find hare in thier stew.

Not sure about the Dolphin thing...

I’ve flown into NJ on the way to Belfast and then back on the way home.....

My advice...avoid NJ.

This is stupid. Those dolphins should have been out of that river months ago. They will die if they don't get to the ocean asap.

The article doesn’t say who wants the dolphins in the river and who wants them back in the ocean.

Evidently the dolphins know how to get to the ocean if they wanted to go there.

Unless the construction noise was the installation of pilings or sheet bulkheading that they could sense underwater, I don’t see why they would be afraid of “noise”. If they were in the Shrewsbury River in the summer, the only time it’s quiet is around 4 am in the morning!

It is up to the state it seems. I would think by now they would have this figured out. It has happened before in the past & that pod of dolphins died. I don’t understand why somebody doesn’t just get them out of there. They can’t get enough food in the river...Shaking my head again.
