Tim Tebow took over for Florida and the top-ranked Gators grabbed a 14-7 lead over No. 2 Oklahoma after three quarters at the BCS national championship game Thursday night. With two Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks and offenses that combined to average 99 points per game in the regular season, the Gators and Sooners were expected to trade scores most of the night at Dolphin Stadium.
But the defenses came up with most of the biggest plays in the first 30 minutes, and Tebow was the show in the third and forth quarter. Florida wins 24- 14.
Yep, the offense looked to be intimidated. They were indecisive too. While Florida’s defense played great, OU got spooked and kept adjusting instead of dominating on the ball. Sometimes I think we’re just gluttons for punishment; OU chokes by either overconfidence or intimidation in these big games.
Grats Florida! :P
OU didn’t choke, they gave UF everything they had, they were a play or two away from winning the game.
It was a great battle, both teams should be proud.
An outstanding game - TEBOW, HARVIN, NELSON, DUNLAP, all of them - WINNERS!!
What a great game and thanks Gators we love you!
Congrats to UF
That was the weirdest game I have ever seen.
The way the Sooners would get set, then look to their coach for signals for the next play interrupted all sense of rhythm, including their own.
The Sooners dominated the first half, but were only able to score 7.
Rod Serling could have scripted this game.
As I saw it on medium high def (Fox broadcasts 720i not 1080i) the Ok player actually caught the ball and the Fl player stripped it from him...on a play like that I think it shouldn't count as an interception against the Ok QB...hey they change the rules all of the time... just stats but they say something about the player.
Same difference if the receiver drops the pass.
there where some strange penalties on FL...that obsessive celebration penalty on a 3rd down conversion was really strange
Yeah, I agree - it should have been scored as a fumble by the receiver, not as an interception thrown by the quarterback.
The OK receiver had possession of the ball, but the FL defensive back just wanted it more.
Kinda like how the FL defense just wanted it more in those goal-line stands of the first half.
OK was probably the better team, but they brought an amateurish, lackadaisical attitude to this game, and, as a result, they go home losers.
Somehow I knew you’d be on this thread . . lol.
Yeah, that was THE play. Tebow and Harvin were great, but Florida’s D won this game. 14 points for OU, wow.
Funny you say that. First time I've watched OK and I came away thinking they (college football) need to shorten the play clock because of the time OK took to run a play. Holy cow. I felt I was watching Dean Smith and the North Carolina 4-corners offense out on a football field.
It definitely distracted me and I was only watching them on TV!
How true, it seemed like every play took only 7 seconds off the clock.
One weird thing I noticed, is that when Florida got charged with a couple of false start penalties, the game clock kept running after the penalty, I thought the clock stops on a penalty.
Agreed.
In one of those goal-line stands of the first half, if the OK center had just snapped the ball, then the OK quarterback would have squirted into the endzone on a quarterback sneak, but the OK coaches called it off, and the FL defense regrouped while OK was hesitating, and when OK finally snapped the ball, FL tackled them for a loss.
It was a completely lackadaisical, amateurish series on the part of OK, and it's why they lost the game.
You got me there. But if I had to guess, the clock probably can't stop on an offensive penalty (well, except while the ruling is given) like a false start otherwise it would be a great strategy :-)
Caught this interesting tidbit from the Gainesville Sun blog from a reporter attending the game:
“Guess you can say this crowd leans to the right. Much of the sellout booed when former President Bill Clinton, attending the game, was shown on the JumboTron screen.”
And the majority of fans in that crowd were Gator fans. Another reason to be proud of my Alma Mater.
No question which was the better team. Since I am not a fan of either team I enjoyed the contest disinterestedly.
