Partisan politics hits the Steelers-Chargers game
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, 44th Estate ^ | January 8, 2009 | Salena Zito

Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Pittsburgh, and Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-San Diego, don’t just differ on what direction the country should go. No, their partisanship runs much deeper than that. Their juggernaut is over who wins the critically important Steelers-Chargers playoff game that will be held in Pittsburgh this Sunday.

At stake is a "friendly" wager that will mean lunch for the legislative staffs of whatever team comes up on top. If the Chargers win, Doyle will buy Primanti Brothers sandwiches and Iron City Beer for the meal. If the Steelers win, Bilbray will buy Rubio’s Mexican Food and Stone Brewery Beer.

“The Chargers won’t know what hit them Sunday” said Doyle via e-mail, “I almost feel bad about scoring a free lunch off Brian. Too bad they don't have a Primanti Brothers in San Diego."

Bilbray shot back saying, really? “Come Sunday afternoon, the Chargers are going to

San Diego by seven, so let it be etched in stone.

Your right, they must have been trying hard to keep a strait face when they agreed to that bet...

How cute! While the country cartwheels down range out of control, our elected representatives are talking about the big game, and what they'll eat for lunch.

Go team!

Come Sunday the curtain is coming down on the Steelers necks. The first time Roth gets hit his brain is going into a freeze. You can recover from a concussion in 14 days but it doesn’t heal.

San Diego by 10.

The Chargers will be defeated when they first step on the frozen tundra.

The cold weather will help the Chargers by keeping the passing game down, their secondary is the weakest part of their defense.

Pitt will have to keep it on the ground and will have a tough time running against the Chargers who also have a better running game.

I’ll say it again, Roth may be alert but he’ll be tentative due to his concussion. He’ll be hearing footsteps all day and if the Chargers get a good lick in on him, he won’t be back in the game.

BTW - In last years AFC Chanpionship game against the Pats and a healthy Brady it was worse. And they lost only by nine without their premier running back, tight end, linebacker and a hobbled quarterback.

Steeler fans are whistling past the graveyard if they think it’s going to be easy against San Diego.

I don't think it will be easy. I was hoping the Dolphins would beat the Ravens so that the Steelers could avoid the Chargers or Colts in this round. Chargers are a scary team with really nothing to lose since they weren't expected to even be in the playoffs just 3 weeks ago. All 4 teams in the AFC are monster tough on defense...I actually think Tennessee is the weakest of the 4 remaining teams.

It will be a fun game to watch, Chargers-Steelers games always are. If the Steelers win I hope they go to the Superbowl.

There’s no animosity in San Diego about Pitt, just a good rivalry.

The only reason Pittsburgh has home field advantage they get to roll over the hapless Benglas twice each season. They’re essentially spotted 2 W’s in the win column each new season, year after year. Mike Brown owner of the Bengals epitomizes loser.
