Doggy detective finds missing Fort Worth police canine

For anyone keeping score at home, here’s the tally: Fort Worth police helicopter: 0, Godiva the search dog: 1.

Fort Worth police officers lost one of their own on New Years Day when Loki, a search and rescue canine, chewed through the fence of his handler’s backyard and escaped into the streets of Fort Worth.

After searching for hours with a helicopter and police cruisers, Fort Worth police called in Godiva, a chocolate Labrador, from Dog Gone Detectives — a firm that specializes in finding lost pets.

Within 15 minutes, Godiva had hunted down Loki about a half mile away from the backyard where he escaped.

“Usually, it isn’t that easy,” said Kat Manning, the co-owner of Dog Gone Detectives. “We got on the trail. Then all of the sudden, I looked up and there he was. He was just hanging out.”

Again, I’d guess Collie, not Border Collie. I think I see a kink tail, too, but the angle is not correct. Any side shots?

I am so glad you showed that on the Panda Shepherd colors. Franka(or Frankie as we call her)is my Honey Pickle’s grandmother and Flash was that very first Panda Shepherd. Cindy McCann is the breed founder and her kennel name is Phenom Shepherds.com.

One of the club Swamp Collies got his Hunting Retriever Champion title at our last hunt test, and qualified for the Spring Grand. He’s quite the retriever!

Sounds like a crummy breeder. Did she get any sort of guarantee?

I am curious how many founders are there in the Panda Shepherd line? Are they bred back to non Pandas? Interesting color.

I support rescue as well. I did the photos for dogs with Santa this year (profits went to our local golden rescue). It was fun, and the dogs had a good time (I think Santa did too!)

The amount of work and training that goes into field dogs is amazing. I am far too lazy at this point in my life, altho I hope if we move back to TX (before I’m too old) I can get involved again. It’s too difficult out here to find water and open spaces to train.

I always do a temperament test before my puppies goes home. In addition to simply observing them, the test helps me place them in appropriate homes. I know a lot of people don’t like the volhard test, but I really do like it and for the most part it’s been very accurate for me. The most difficult thing tho, at 8 weeks, is to choose show potential.

I wish I could answer you on that; but I am not as well versed on them as I would like to be. Please feel free to contact the breed founder and ask her any question you wish. She is at Phenom Shepherds. Also, please contact Dr. Neff at UCLA at Davis. His information is on her website. I am sure he will be happy to answer any of your questions too.

It's amazing though to see what a good field dog can do.

I was out on the polo fields today with the dogs, and met a lady with her young daughter who wanted to know "what do retrievers do?" So I spotted a plastic grocery bag around 50 yards away, sat Shelley, aimed her at it, and told her, "BACK!" She galloped out, got to the bag and I whistled her to a sit and told her, "Go on, fetch it up!" She picked up the grocery bag (after looking at me like I was nuts) and trotted back to sit and heel and deliver to hand. Ruby tried to steal it.

After a dog's force-fetched, it should pick up your car keys if you tell it to.

Oh, I was just curious. If they can breed back to other colors their gene pool is plenty wide. Anyway, they are cool looking.

I’ve heard of it. A few years back it was all the talk among golden people. But I haven’t heard much lately.
