I guess all those articles I read in the paper about pit bulls killing and maiming people are made up?
Makes me glad I have cockers. Most have been bird chasers (it's in their breeding) and 2 of them have actually caught up to birds. In both cases, they just stopped and barked at them until the poor birds hopped to safety. Vicious brutes! LOL
First, of course the media loves those stories (like it loves stories about how badly Iraq is going, but when it’s going well, they suddenly lose interest).
Second, most people can’t tell a pit bull from a boxer or a bulldog, etc so, are you SURE those stories are all about pit bulls?
Third, most pit bulls in this country have not bitten anyone, so while there are bad ones most of them aren’t bad, which seems to be something the general public and many posters on FR don’t seem to know (because they think the media would never mislead them, I suppose).
Fourth, there is a contingent out there who likes to own bad dogs (these folks should not own any dogs, period) and they gravitate toward mean looking dogs. They also like mastiffs and cane presario. It’s no surprise that they find the worst temperaments they can to breed, don’t socialize the dogs and do everything they can to make them into aggressive nasty dogs.
Lastly, is that if they ARE bad they can do more damage than say a doxie—which in my experience are also quite likely to bite.
You make me laugh. My first golden, who was my husband’s hunting companion once had a bird fly out of a bush right into her face. She caught it and brought it, alive but I’m sure terrified) to my husband, who took it from her and let it go. The dog gave him the dirtiest look a dog can give, I’m sure she thought he was crazy to waste her effort!
But most importantly, those breeds (rottie, canPresario, pitbull) are untrustworthy, unpredictable, have bad temperments, have jaws like steel traps (pits), are used as guard dogs for a reason. They can kill people. A doxy can’t kill someone.....
Actually, no, you’re wrong, but I don’t expect to be able to convince you, so, why are we having this discussion? (pits btw are not used for guard dogs, they are lousy at it).
Their reporting on dogs closely mirrors their reporting on conservatives, religion, and gun owners. They're reporting according to a template and the truth is irrelevant when an agenda can be served.
Trustworthiness and predictability and temperament evaluation are all characteristics that only have meaning in relation to the owner.
Competent and responsible owners can properly evaluate their own limitations and choose the appropriate dog breed for them. Most Pit Bull, Rottweiler, and guard dog owners are competant to own those breeds.
My brothers friend got a rottie puppie and for 7 years he took great care of that dog....took him everywhere he went. Then one truck ride the dog snapped and chewed up his arm...almost got killed in an accident. The dog was put down. I dont’ care who owns this type of dog....they snap.
Taking a dog everywhere is not the same as being a responsible owner.
Dogs don’t just snap. Aggressive dogs either have an illness (certain forms of epilepsy) or they have been badly trained.
IME aggressive dogs are untrained. Biting their owners is the result of the owners letting them behave aggressively. Some dogs after being allowed the behavior escalate and some don’t. After an owner lets this behavior go on into adulthood it generally takes professional help to manage.
The Rottie owners I know never let them get to this point. They raise them properly from the beginning. Over the years one has never “snapped”, go figure.
Come on now. Goldens are SO smart they are able to convincingly play dumb.
What a bunch of BS.
