Stay!

“Stay!” they say, and then they go away.
Forever, we suppose. It always seems like that.
Waiting. Well, we know how to wait.
We don’t pretend to hate it like the cat.

She always sleeps, and then pretends,
She never really noticed you were gone.
While we sat, and stayed, and waited,
Just for you to come and then be waited on.

And after that interminable century when you return,
I fetch your slippers while my brother,
Who has been a nervous Rex throughout the day,
Having seen I’ve done one thing will do another.

We wait, and wait, for just the chance to wait on you,
And tend your every need at end of day,
While cat wakes up and lets you pet her,
And then with studied calm just walks away.
