I feel so nostalgic about the old days, enjoying the natural beauty of this state. We have so much of it, and the gorgeous weather, couldn’t be better.
I was telling GeeBee recently about my long ago friend, Doris Davenport. I can give her real name because she has passed on. She was once an up and coming actress in the heyday of Hollywood, but was terribly injured in a car crash and never got parts again.
She and I became neighbors in the mid-’60s. She was in her 50s and I in my 20s but we became fast friends. She knew how to live. When we both had time off (and wanted to get away from all our suitors, haha), we drove all the way up the coast taking our time. At that time, there was very little development in Cambria (it was called Cambria Pines) and that was a great overnight stop. You could hear the waves of the ocean at night.
We stopped in Solvang, bought cheese, bread and wine, drove all the way up to San Francisco. Those were easy times, where you could change itinerary spontaneously.
I have travelled the coast a few more times, Jade Cove being a favorite discovery also, and am glad I have those memories.
Meg, I also spent many a lovely day or weekend in Santa Barbara, shopping the old State Street and staying in B’n’Bs, going to the botanical gardens and the Mission.
California is still such a beautiful place, most parts of it. It makes me sick that all I want to do is leave.
We enjoy getting to the coast .... Santa Barbara, Solvang, Morro Bay, Cambria and Monterey. We have also enjoyed the coast north of SF ... Bodega Bay, Eureka, etc.
We have great memories.
One can be in an entirely different world on a Sunday drive. I also loved exploring Santa Barbara.
Both my children were born in California while my husband was in the Navy..and I lived there 3 more times...visited several times, too.
Hi Dita :)
Great memories of fun times with your friend! It’s sad she had to cut her acting career short.
I have never been to the west coast. I hope to visit someday. Driving the coast, visiting towns, is what I’d like to do! I’ll visit you also! :) You live in such a beautiful part of our country. So much to do and see.
