I only met "the Brute" once in 1967 while I was in traction, recovering from a gunshot wound in the Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital. He was touring the wards and when he got to my bed, he hit his head on one of the supports of my traction rig.

I made the titanic mistake of saying "Shoot Sir, I need to put a rotating red light on that thing: you're the third General Officer today to hit his head on it".

He was not pleased with my Lance Corporal impertinence and I was treated to a full display of Brute's legendary temper.

A bit later, I received a medal for an action in Vietnam and I noted with warmth that Gen Krulak had signed it. That signed citation is one of my treasured possessions. He was one hell of a Marine.
