Oh my.
I hear the Raiders need a coach. Oh wait,
Al and Mike aren’t speaking, huh?
Wow. Thanks for the memories and don’t let the gate hit you in the arse on the way out.
Dan Snyder likes big names.
Wow. I thought he had a for life contract.
You’re only as good as your last game.
Well I didn’t see that one coming. How long has he been in Denver 15 years? I guess when you blow a 3 game lead over the last 3 weeks you have set yourself up.
He’ll be the first one hired out of all the jobs available if he wants it
Maybe if Bill Ford cared enough about the Lions he would hire Shanahan, give him unlimited powers and a guaranteed iron-clad, multi-year, no-matter-what, big-bucks contract, Detroit might reach real-NFL status!
Nah! I'm dreaming . . .
He had his team in first place for 15 games.
Despite his unprecedented success, Shanahan had led the team to just one playoff win since John Elway's retirement in 1998, and this year's December collapse, which extended the club's playoff drought to three years, apparently sealed his fate in the eyes of team owner Pat Bowlen.
"After giving this careful consideration, I have concluded that a change in our football operations is in the best interests of the Denver Broncos," said Bowlen in a statement. "This is certainly a difficult decision, but one that I feel must be made and which will ultimately be in the best interests of all concerned."
"I appreciate the 21 years that Mike Shanahan has given to the organization as an assistant and head coach, and the two Super Bowl wins in that time. His contributions hold a special place in Broncos history."
Bowlen was expected to meet the media on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the team's future plans.
When Ron Zook was fired from UF, there was a lot of speculation that Shanahan would be the next Gators coach, as he was an assistant there in the 80s.
* They were 4-0 in 2003 and finished 10-6.
* They were 5-1 in 2004 and wound up 10-6.
* They were 7-2 in 2006 and finished 9-7.
* They started 2-0 last year and finished 7-9.
* They were 3-0 and the NFL's most explosive team this year and finished 8-8.
The Broncos in recent years have matched up poorly against physical teams like Jacksonville, Miami and Carolina.
The Broncos demise in December (2008) is in the record book as the biggest choke by a NFL franchise ...
the Broncos have this ignominious NFL record all to themselves.
They led the AFC west in early December by three games with three remaining. San Diego trailed by three games and needed to win all three and have the Broncos lose all three to tie. A tie would give the AFC west to the Chargers because they had a better intra-conference record.
Denver's remaining games were the Panthers (away), Bills (home), Chargers (away). The Broncos only had to win one of the remaining three games to take the AFC west. When they lost to the lagging Bills in Denver their season was essentially over, if they couldn't beat the Bills in Denver it was highly unlikely they would beat the red hot Chargers in SD. The Broncos lost to the Chargers 52-21.
Pat Bowlin's patience had run its course.
But...
Don't they know he's a GENIUS?
I’ve been a Bronco fan since 1962 and can’t remember a more pathetic defensive showing over the course of a season, constantly giving up big plays because of poor tackling and missed assignments...and probably subpar talent.
6 lousy interceptions, total?
Turnover ratio -17?
That’s unbelievable.
Wow, the Jets fire Mangini despite him having 2 winning seasons out of 3 there, and now Denver lets go one of the best coaches in thier history due to failure to live up to expectations this season.
Meanwhile my Bills reward mediocre Dick Jouron of the perpetual 7-9 seasons with a contract extension.
Excuse me while I go shoot myself.
If the Chiefs change...that would be 3 of the 4 coaches in the AFC West in one year...might be a new record.
Good move by the Broncos. Too many years of mediocrity. I don’t think Shanahan’s “system” will work anymore. Not counting the playoffs in 03, they’ve gotten a little worse each year since 1999.
Bill Clinton was in his first term when Shanahan got the job!
