Hello Fellow Freepers!
I am young and a bit naive when it comes to firearms but am interested in a good home defense shotgun. As I am well aware many of you have experience in this area I was wondering what recomendations you might have to Remington 870 express vs the Mossberg 500?
I hear Oregon is nice. Climate and culture similar to Northern California. Good job market around the Portland area. Great gun laws, including shall-issue CCW permits, short barrel rifles, full-auto, suppressors, “stand your ground” self-defense law, etc.
Mossberg if you’re going with a straight standard stock. Make sure you have a metal safety button or replace it if you have the plastic one.
Remington if you want a rear stock with a pistol grip.
Mossberg if you want to modify the elevator to fire Aguila MiniShells with buckshot. You’ll increase the magazine capacity about thirty percent.
Remington if you want to modify the shotgun with every known accessory on the planet.
Actually, you should buy the shotgun that fits you.
a pump shotgun is ideal for a nervous beginner. Benelli Nova, Mossy 500 or Remington 870 are all good.
as for a 9mm I watch grown men shoot pathetic groups at 10 feet every time I go to the range pistoling has to be done right and practiced.
bump
Personal preference is a Mossberg 500 with a pistol grip on each end. It fits me better than the Remington, and I am big and strong enough to sight down the barrel even with magnum shells. I can pull the trigger nearly as fast as on my Ruger .357. And it makes a good two handed club and defensive weapon.
When I lived in Dearborn, Mi (in a gated community about 1 mile from the Detroit border), I chambered it with 000 alternating with 3 or 4 buckshot so as to handle whatever situation came up. My friend out in Romulus alternated 000 with slugs since he lived in a rougher neighborhood.
I have an old Sears side-by-side double barrel (the kind with two triggers!) and I think it’ll handle the trespassers, intruders, and revenuers just fine.
I think you should listen to your Dad and Uncle’s on this matter.

you posted twice old man. I think we should all welcome the constant lurker and now official noob Freeper!
Welcome aboard Pops! Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

I picked up an older (almost as new) mossberg 500AB with a slug barrel for $125. I suspect the previous owner put a box of shell through it and stuck it in a closet for 25 years. It holds 5 +1 which is more than enough for home defense. Try to find an 870 for that price.
