Unless things have changed significantly since I taught math in a border community in Texas, the Spanish taught in American high schools and college is Castillian. This is not the Spanish spoken in Latin and South America. The students from Mexico had a very difficult time with their own language because of the differences between the manner in which Spanish is spoken in Mexico and that of Spain.

We need to make sure our children learn to speak Spanish. You can make all the laws you want about English being the official of this country and I will agree with them, BUT....
We live in a bi-cultural society that is just a fact. These find hard working people are not illegals, they are American Citizens just like you and I. For us it is a choice of being respectful to your friends and neighbors by trying to be able to communicate on a personal and friendly basis. Over half of my sons friends are Hispanic and when he visits their homes and is greeted by their grandparents he needs to be able to communicate with proper respect in a way they can understand. We teach our son that respect is the rule, not a choice. This isn't a government matter it is a personal situation for many of us.
When my son is older and in business he will be dealing with half the local population that speaks Spanish as their first language. Not knowing the language would put him at a huge disadvantage in our local business world. The reality of life isn't about politics it's about personal relationships that are based on the ability to communicate.
