There may be something here that will help my nephew who just decided to change careers. Could be a nice XMas present for some.

I didn’t read all the links.
Its also wise to tailor a cover sheet that shows your interest in the particular Company you are applying to.

Original Post on this topic. FYI, as a hiring manager, I know of where I speak on this topic. Too often I've seen otherwise excellent resumes simply discarded by HR departments because they didn't contain the "buzzwords" or phrases the HR folks were instructed to look for.
In this economy, it's especially important to demonstrate the capacity to market yourself to what employers are looking for and differentiate yourself from other candidates at the same time.
For any of you who have the added burden of looking for a job at this time of year, my heart and prayers go out to you.

Its also wise to tailor a cover sheet that shows your interest in the particular Company you are applying to. That is an excellent point one of which is often overlooked. Taking 15-20 minutes to read a company's website, look at their last profit statement or press release and incorporating that into a cover letter shows an active interest in the company and what it does.

I have seen people who were “hand picked” by the dept who is hiring, get thwarted when the resume is routed to HR.
It’s a sad situation that the gatekeepers are clueless as to the needs of the company.
That being said, There are ways around these things, And your suggestion is on of them.

I'm so sorry your experience with a 23 year old college grad was so bad.
I've never been in the military, but I'll tell you this: when I've run across guys like you and I've been in a position to hire, I'd hire you in a heartbeat.
Didn't matter to me if you have 70% of the skills I was looking for or 100%. I knew guys like you had great foundations to build on, would learn what was required quickly and typically had great work ethics.
My sincere thanks to you for your service to our country.

You have to sell your skills as well as your enthusiasm!
Tailoring the resume a bit adds interest.
You can use a basic template for this, just change the players and the mission statements and skill sets as required.
Always close with how you look forward to working with this “Team” etc. Corporate loves that stuff. L0L
