“Isn’t divorce grand”?
It can be anywhere from bad to horrible but it usually does’t end in death. I’m sure more facts will come out about this case. I strongly suspect the soon to be ex-husband was a spouse abuser.

You're right, of course. And calex59's post #19 is right as well:
If this guy had a problem with the custody, of if his wife acted unlawfully he should have gone to court. In most states his actions would be considered kidnapping. I know, they are his children also but you don't have the right to go into your ex-wife's residence and forcibly take the kids. Grandpa acted within the law IMO.
But let me ask this: When the law comes between a man and his children, what do we expect he's going to do?
Stepping between a father and his children - or mother and her children, for that matter - is a dangerous, dangerous thing to do.
