Of course he used the back to practice on! If the paint could be lifted off all of his masterpieces you would most likely find failed paintings or practice drawings. Good grief, it's not like he could get on the Internet, order supplies and have UPS deliver them to his front door. The only surprise here is that no one noticed these drawings before.
