Ultrasounds aren’t standard postnatal procedures, are they? Anyway, kudos to the good Doctor Scholl for sniffing out the problem.

I suspect the baby showed signs of something amiss with the brain and that's why the ultrasound was done. They do a pretty comprehensive physical exam on a newborn and something that big in the head would certainly be causing problems. There's only so much room inside there and it's not enough for other body parts to be occupying. I would expect some pretty strong neurological manifestations with much intra-cranial space being taken up by the extra parts.
