The U.S. government could slap higher taxes on gasoline to push up the price.

What a damfool regressive do-nothing tax.

You want to help the economy? Help national security? Put a tariff on imported oil and distillates, which will support (and is phased out at) say, $50.00/bbl. Gas will stay up, distillates will stay up, essential heating fuels will be up, but a tax deduction/credit could take care of that for those who heat with oil, and industry (domestic oil exploration) would keep going albeit at a reduced rate.

That is the sort of tax which (long term) would help the economy and reduce dependence on jihadi financiers and socialists abroad, rather than just sink the government's teeth into another vein.

The decrease in gas prices is similar to a tax decrease and is the only thing positive for the economy in the last six months and for the foreseeable 0bama future.

The 'rats are proceeding at full throttle to continue to screw the economy. Raising the gas tax would be just more of their mismanagement.
