My wife was a medical transcriptionist, and when the work is there, the pay is good. Problem is that when the companies anticipate signing a big contract with a new hospital they hire on a bunch of new people and the work dries up. If the contract falls through, well, the work gets rare.
There are also opportunities for customer service work. I heard somewhere that Jet Blue hired people to book reservations from their home. You take the calls at home and make the reservation. That was some time ago--I'm not sure if Jet Blue even exists anymore.

Try doctors phone answering from home. Hours are lousy though. (Late night-early morning)

What is your field of knowledge? Depending on the area, private consultancy is becoming big. I would suggest grabbing the book “Free Agent Nation”.
Be very, very, very cautious of most work at home offers. Unless you are buying a franchise, you should never have to pay money to work for someone. Avoid Multi-Level-Marketing offers. Most of these have the primary business case of making money based on ‘failure’, ie, they make most of their revenue from people buying in but never reaching the threshold to pay them commission. Very few actually have decent products and base their business on selling those (Avon and Mary Kay are few that have business models based around their actual product.)

Mama25 ...You could try medical billing. You can get into that for about $2500 plus a good computer and do it from home. You can train yourself with the software and sell your services to individual doctors in your area. Don't buy a package (software and other junk) from some high dollar scam dealer though, do the research to put it together yourself. You can expect to make around 20 to 30 bucks and hour maybe a bit more. The down side is that you will be keeping long hours and you will need to have space to store files, a lot of files. Good Lucky

What kind of skills do you have?
I imagine a lot of Freepers will be starting businesses and could use various skilled other Freepers.
We should start a jobs board where we hire each other!

If you have skills in bookkeeping and office work, how about working as a consultant setting up bookkeeping for small businesses? If you know anything about finances, perhaps you could work as a consultant for people who have money problems?
I would think the latter might be a growth industry......

Oh, yeah. LOVE that idea! My skills are primarily office manager/book-keeping skills. I was doing alot of AR work, but I can do AP, too.
GREAT idea!

Going by my mother’s experiences (and those of the companies she’s worked for) you are way ahead of the game in AP if you can present your clean criminal record and personal recommendations from previous employers. Finding an honest person to trust with business checks is a roll of the dice these days, worth your weight in gold for sure.
I wish you well in your endeavors, just a tad bereft of ideas to give you. Best of luck to you and your family!

Hi there. I am also looking for home based employment, and you mentioned Watkins and I have used a couple of their products and really don't like to use anything else but their remedies for ache pains and colds. What is involved with being a Watkins Rep. I am very interested because of the quality of the products. Thank you.
