This pyramid is somewhat reminiscent of the pyramids of the Sun and Moon at Teotihuacan which I visited and climbed in 1957. It has the pattern of several terraced levels, with steps leading from the ground and from level to level, as did the ones I saw. The terraced levels do bear some resemblance to the stepped pyramids like Saqqara of Egypt, but the ornamentation of the stonework I think is much more elaborate in Mexico.
That's probably what made me think of Egypt.
For some reason - multiculturalism? who knows! - the Egyptian pyramids were brought up almost every year of school I can remember.
In retrospect, it's strange: we have pyramids and ancient civilizations here in the Americas, but our schools - at least, for me - focus on the other side of the world.
I don't mean to take away any of the majesty of the Egyptian pyramids, just would have liked a more local focus.
