I quit trying to understand their logic a long time ago.
The “logic” is whatever reasoning will convince the most people that it makes sense. It doesn’t matter if it’s consistent with their beliefs or other statements.
One of my favorites in this area is the reasoning of the gay marriage crowd. They oppose a federal marriage amendment to the constitution, because they say that each state should decide how to define marriage. But a majority of the states, 30 as of right now, have defined marriage in their constitutions, but they are against those amendments, even though the legislatures and/or citizens of each state had to follow certain legal procedures to adopt those amendments.
Even though the states are defining marriage, without a federal amendment, the homosexual marriage crowd is against the states deciding to define marriage, even though they said they were in favor of states deciding.
