May 09, 2007 Benedict taking the role of Hirst, in the American Repertory Theatre's "No Man's Land" in Cambridge.
Thanks for posting this! I loved him in the Christopher Guest movies, and in “Goodbye Girl”. He was one of those actors you never put a name to, and that is either really good or really bad for an actor.
RIP, Mr. Benedict.
He was a Film teacher in ‘The Freshman’!
It’s worth renting just for him. The inventor of the “Fleeber Method” of acting.
He was especially funny as the arrogant film professor in “The Freshman”.
He was as God made him.
In “Hang ‘em High” (I think) he was the man on the gallows awaiting execution along with 4 others. (It was a five-holer gallows.) Asked for his last words, he wouldn’t shut up.
checked his movie credits and hang em high complete cast list, did not find him listed...i remember the scene you are talking about...was funny....(not the hanging of course but the charactor that wouldn’t shut up)
Actually, it was Michael O'Sullivan (the actor) playing Francis Elroy Duffy (the prisoner)...per IMDB.com.
Speaking of HEH, other prominent actors included Alan Hale Jr. (Skipper), Mark Lenard (Sarek from Star Trek), and Pat Hingle (Commissioner Gordon from the Tim Burton Batman movies).
With Benedict's passing, only a select few of the cast remain alive: George (Sherman Hemsley, 70), maid Florence (Marla Gibbs, 77), Jenny Willis Jefferson (Berlinda Tolbert, 60), doorman Ralph (Ned Wertimer, 85), and Lionel Jefferson (Damon Evans, 59).
Interesting trivia: the actress who played the Jeffersons' granddaughter, Jessica (daughter of Lionel and Jenny), is Ebonie Smith...better known as Carrie Murtaugh in the four Lethal Weapon movies.
