I was lucky. I was going about 40 on the road and didn't see until it was too late (it was in my lane) and I couldn't stop in time. Some people have been killed in those accidents. My car isn't totaled but the hood and front panels will need to be replaced. Insurance covers it under the comprehensive policy. Its not considered at fault for no one knows how a deer will react to a motor vehicle.

I was going 65 and the deer came out the late afternoon sun from the general direction of a fenced airport. I ducked behind the A-pillar for an instant and avoided the broken glass shards that covered the car’s interior. The wind coming into the car was strong so I slowed to 45 for the rest of the trip.
