You have to take a written test each time you renew? All we have to do is pass an eye test.

DLs are renewed every 5 years (sooner if driving problems) and written tests are required.

When I was much younger, they would send you a questionnaire about your health and when you sent that back with the fee, they would mail you a new license.

I don't know if the written test is dependent on age or not. I took the written test 5 years ago too.
