Natalie Portman turned down the chance to play a nun opposite movie great Meryl Streep in Doubt - because she can't get her head around celibacy.

The actress was at one point very interested in the movie adaptation of John Patrick Shanley's hit play - but she turned the part down because she couldn't see herself as a lifelong virgin.

What did Jesus do?

He came to Earth to pay the penalty for our sins. He also rose from the dead to foreshadow our promise of eternal life. He is currently seated at God's right hand, waiting for the final trumpet. You cool with that?

Portman isn't a hypocrite like some are in Hollywood. She sticks to her convictions.

"Natalie recently told reporters that she has special outfits made for her to wear when filming because she won't wear leather. "I'm an animal lover and I've been a vegetarian for 17 years," says Portman. "I won't wear leather in my own life and I won't wear it for a movie either. They have to make me clothes from fake leather."

Not even leather shoes.

Brainless twit - and I certainly don't mean Meryl Streep. The girl is just so far below the bar that Meryl sets and she knows it.

I don’t find this so odd. Celibacy, or really, chastity, is an extraordinary commitment by the chaste. It isn’t easy, or there would be a lot more celibate clergy.

Importantly, a lot of vital energy is preserved in chastity. This can give a lot of depth that most people lack, to those who can achieve it.

The majority of people don’t conserve their energy, and don’t have a lot to begin with, so for much of their lives they are exhausted.or can even be called “empty”. This is why chaste clergy often seem to be “towers of strength.”

Well he brought a dead man back to life. The man had been dead for days and was stinking. But of all the miracles that astound me the one that is quite interesting to me and often overlooked is what happened when he died on the cross. People rose out of graves and began walking around. Heavy stuff.

Of course he had sex. He was a normal man, therefore he had normal sexual urges. What do you think he was doing with Mary Magdalene, a prostitute?

Chapter and verse, please.

So, Ms. Portman CAN wrap her head around being a Queen from outer space and a clerk at a magical, living toy store but CAN’T fathom the notion of a life without sex. Space aliens? Sure. Storybook characters? OK, with you so far. Devout Christians who give themselves wholly to their God/cause: Nope, just don’t get it.

Not surprising really. Just sad.

I don’t think that it’s she can’t understand celibacy, but that she can’t imagine herself being celibate... there’s a difference. I *understand* that some people want to work convenient 9-to-5 office jobs that involve sitting behind a desk for most of their professional careers, but I can’t imagine myself doing that. Anyways, back to the main topic, part of acting is getting into the character’s head, and knowing how they would think, how they would act, etc - if Natalie Portman knows she can’t get into this character’s head, then it’s only a reasonable decision for her to turn down the job offer (and spare the rest of us the poor acting job that would have otherwise resulted from her attempting to play a character she shouldn’t be playing).

Pssstttt... Natalie... It's called ACTING!!!! Like "make believe," but you get paid lots of money for reasons I've never understood.

Look, you're relatively cute, so your best bet is to just keep your yap shut.

I was completely unaware that once you play a nun you must become one!

You must have missed the memo. Check out Whoopi Goldberg. She used to be a lounge singer in Reno, but now she's a nun.

I don’t really think it’s the sex. The sex is just a symptom of the bigger problem which is that it’s difficult to understand becoming a nun when one is a narcissist.

but she turned the part down because she couldn't see herself as a lifelong virgin.

Clearly, she is mentally challenged. This makes her out not to be a very good actress. Only good in limited role casting. Oh, well.
