We won them. Texas voluntarily joined the union.
Old history. Move on..
In 1824 Mexico won it's independence from Spain and then adopted a constitution much like our own. It then set a policy in place to encourage American settlers to remain or move into Texas. Americans could buy land for a little more than a dollar an acre,, pay no taxes and for some time lived free.
Four years later,, the results of the first election were overturned by musket and the centrist faction gained control of the government. The new government did not like the American settlers in Texas. They were a bad example to the aristocrats that had just seized power. In 1830 they passed a law to stop all immigration and called for a military presence in Texas. Moreover,, they then made it clear they were going to assimilate the Texans into Mexico and end their self government.
This is how the whole war started. It started from Mexico. Mexico invited the Americans in, allowed them self government, then that Mexican government was taken over, they revoked their constitution of 1824 and then began to target and take away the Texans freedoms.
Their biggest mistake was to attempt to disarm the Texans.
History is a fascinating thing.
A lot of this "Who stole what from who?" is just a line drawing game. Who did Mexico take the land from?? I love how only the Americans are accused of stealing land and having slaves. Even the Indians stole from each other.
One other note,, from what I have read,, the Comanches hated the Mexicans a lot more than they did the Texans. They would often raid Mexican villages and encampments while leaving the Americans alone.
They regarded the Texans as a particularly ferocious tribe of whites who gave back as good as they got and often times more. Consequently requiring a pretty good reason to engage them ie; Texas Rangers.
Tell him to read about the Mexican war from an unbiased source and forget what his La Raza professors taught him.
well we mexican people are tought about this a bit different, that’s why your mexican frind told you that, but the ugly truth is “not exactly”.
It is said that many american citizens came to live to Texas ilegally (that’s funny huh, americans living ilegally in mexico), so many of them had slaves and slavery was abolished since 1830, that’s why Texians wanted to be independent.
About the other places, well that was stupidity and cowardice of president Santa Anna who sold them because he had been imprisoned by USA after the war and that was how he get freedom. So he was a coward and we mexican still don’t like him.
That´s what we are taught on primary school, I don’t know it is right, american version is a bit different.
But what most of us think is that you americans are afraid that now we could do what you did in the past immigrating illegally to USA.
Forget my bad english I’m mnot an english-speaker and I do my best learning your language but now my english is like a 6 year old boy.
So thatis what we know
