I prefer the characterize what happened as an “incident”, not a “play.” Moreover, I believe the incident only proves my point: both teams (unlike SoCal) know they have no chance to win the national championship and very few chances to win the Pac Ten. So, the game has become something of an ironic irrelevancy on both campuses. The self involved students who inhabit both campuses consider the game as an occasion to one up a rival. But both schools - if they are honest with themselves - know the game is little more than an occasion for both schools to parade their football impotence and their assumed intellectual superiority.
