10 Great Football Rivalries
26 November 2008 | bobjam

Posted on 11/26/2008 11:13:02 AM PST by bobjam

It's Rivalry Week in the world of college football! In honor of this wonderful time of the football year, I have assembled a list of ten games that the true fan of college football should attend at least once in a lifetime. The games are listed in no particular order:

1) USC vs UCLA: This is Hollywood vs the rest of Los Angeles

2) California Berkley vs Stanford: The peace-niks vs the tree huggers (or the other way around). This shows that even leftist wackos enjoy college football.

3) Texas vs Oklahoma: The Red River Shootout. Yes, I said "Shootout" and not "Challenge" or "Rivalry" or "Showdown" or some other PC garbage.

4) Colorado vs Nebraska: Boulder vs Lincoln- this is turning into a nice cultural battle.

5) Ohio State vs Michigan: This dates back to the war fought between Michigan and Ohio over Toledo. They say Ohio lost.

6) Alabama vs Auburn: The Iron Bowl.

7) Florida vs Georgia: The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. Anybody who has been there knows exactly way it's called that.

8) Army vs Navy: One of the few games to be found on television where the players don't trash talk, engage in attnetion grabbing celebrations after a tackle, or commit stupid penalties.

9) Harvard vs Yale: Northeastern elitists' version of tailgating and a rivalry can be amusing. The MIT students usually have something planned for this one.

10) Notre Dame vs BYU: This game isn't played every years, no teams mix football and religion more than these two.

Some Honorable Mentions: FAMU vs Howard Kansas vs Missouri Washinton vs Washington St Lehigh vs Lafayette Grambling vs Southern Minnesota vs Wisconsin

Arkansas vs. LSU - always the Friday after Thanksgiving. The Hogs put a chink in the LSU national championship crown last year. Game is not so important this year, but will still be playing for The Boot.

I wasn’t trying to rank them...although I would say the Cocktail Party is the best.

I think LSU/Florida is bigger than Florida/Georgia now. I would add that LSU/Auburn or LSU/Tennessee are just as big.

In fact, it would be darned interesting to see how USC (Southern Cal, not South Carolina) would fare if they played in the SEC rather than the Pac-10. I don’t believe they would be giving up a mere 8 points/game as they are this year...

Florida State & Florida and Florida State & Miami are two pretty intense rivalries. The Gators have rebuilt while Miami and FSU are rebuilding. In the next few years, all Hell will break loose on Florida Gridirons. Oklahoma & Texas is a very heated rivalry, as well as Oklahoma & Nebraska (down but not out).

Arkansas-Texas used to be big. Now Arkansas is about to start playing Tex A&M in Dallas every year. A rivalry in the making.

Arkansas-LSU is a pretty good rivalry.

As is Tenn-Bama. Got to go to this one a few years back.

Notice how I love the SEC? But it looks like the Big 12 is the power conference this year and I like it, too. Went to Baylor and Texas.

Two of the best games I ever attended was Baylor-Tex A&M. Ended with a last second field goal two years in a row. Baylor hates the Aggies about as much as the Aggies hate the Longhorns.

And I love the Red Raiders! Very colorful team!

It’ll take the Hogs a while to re-build. I’m one of those fans who think they were stupid to run Houston Nutt off. And I have to admit I was pulling for Ole Miss. Won’t do it next year but had to this year.

And I think Mitch Mustain is a cry baby mama’s boy.

Florida State-Miami has been a great rivalry. Both teams have been on a downswing, but the rivalry is still a good one and will get better again as they get better.

Clemson-South Carolina is traditionally a nasty game...and a big post0game fight a few yrs ago led to Lou Holtz getting pushed out.

Actually, that's not entirely accurate. As a resident of South Carolina, the fight erupted in the 4th quarter late in the game. Both sides were to blame, and since both were bowl eligible, both schools decided not to go to a bowl game for their punishment. Lou Holtz had already decided to retire before the fight broke out.

RoadWarrior who does UCF have a rivalry with? Seems like they tried with USF, but Jim Leavitt has beat them handily each time. Maybe Tulsa?

Some of the rivalry names are great- perhaps the best is Georgia vs Georgia Tech: “Clean Old Fashioned Hate”

Nebraska vs Colorado is only a rivalry from the Colorado perspective. Nebraskans don’t have enough respect for Colorado (or their fans) to ever consider Colorado a rivalry. Mutual respect is required for a great rivalry, there is no respect in this game...thanks to Colorado...

Clemson and South Carolina should be on that list. Always a heated rivalry, and you can throw the records out for this game.
