Chuck Turner pleads case on rogue radio station

Embattled City Councilor Chuck Turner gave his first lengthy media interview to an unlicensed Grove Hall radio station that owes the federal government $17,000.

Turner spent over an hour yesterday morning chatting it up with the “Wake Up Live Morning Crew” on TOUCH 106.1-FM. Turner was in the studio and took calls from listeners.

Charles Clemons, who founded the 100-watt music station, said he asked Turner about the charges. “He said he is innocent,” said Clemons, who supports Turner.

Turner usually goes on the show every other Monday, but asked to appear yesterday in the wake of the FBI charges. He plans to appear every week until the case is resolved.

The radio station, which calls itself the “fabric of the black community,” went on the air without a license two years ago and was slapped by the Federal Communications Commission with a $17,000 fine last May.

Clemons hasn’t paid the fine but is pursuing a license. He said President-elect Barack Obama supports the Local Community Radio Act to allow more low-powered, local stations.

“I’m not going to pay it,” said Clemons of the fine, adding that his station is “community authorized” and has 200,000 listeners with another 5,000 online. “It’s an admission of guilt.”
