Dave Ramsey: Don’t gamble on your finances

By DAVE RAMSEY
GateHouse News Service
Posted Mar 07, 2009 @ 04:51 PM
“Dave Says” —

SNIPPET: “Starting off

Dear Dave, My husband and I want to open our own franchise health club business. Currently, we have no debt and live in an apartment. We’ve also got about $70,000 in savings. Is a small-business loan the best way to get things started? — Kelly

Dear Kelly, No! Never go into debt to open a business. This is especially true in the health-club industry. Health clubs and gyms come and go like the wind. Besides, you can easily open one of these businesses without borrowing money or tossing it into a franchise deal.

A gym or health club is really like any other business. Start small, even if it means only a few pieces of equipment and a handful of programs in the beginning. If you go all out and finance dozens of the latest and greatest exercise machines, the debt will be like an anchor around your neck, and it will pull you under. Do you get what I’m saying here? It is absolutely vital that you do not borrow money to make this business happen!”

“Despite widespread layoffs, some companies still hiring in this recession”

SNIPPET: “Yet, there was also hiring, with 31,000 jobs added to the health care and social services sectors in February alone.

The so-called “recession-proof jobs” in education, health care and the public service are considered essential services in any economy. Engineering and construction jobs are also seen to be safer in an economic downturn thanks largely to government stimulus spending on such projects as roads and bridges.

That means even in a recession, Canadians can find jobs if they have the right skills - ranging from financial services to engineering to computer and technology expertise. As well, job growth is still expected this year in some regions of the country such as Saskatchewan and other parts of the western economy.

Across the economy there’s still a lot of specialized hiring happening, including thousands of jobs at BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Lt. (TSX:RIM), which hired 4,000 people last year as its business boomed and plans to add another 3,000 in 2009, expanding its workforce to about 15,000 people.

In addition, there are short-term positions for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games and hundreds of new skilled engineers and other workers at Bombardier Aerospace, Canada’s only aircraft maker, which is embarking on a building program for new regional jets.”
