I read recently that 20,000 FedEx employees are classified as Independent Contractors?

I didn't know that! I had a cousin-in-law who delivered for them until about a year ago. She's a hard worker but had trouble keeping up with the hours and days they wanted her to work. That resulted in the outfit she was working for having an extremely high turnover rate. Might be advantageous to the company to hire independents given that.
