12/5/2008: Sprint Cup Awards Banquet on ESPN Classic 9:00-12:00pm/et
This is a long way from Kannapolis, ain’t it?”
Those were the words of Dale Earnhardt 14 years ago as he stepped out of the Presidential Suite at the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel (note the ultra-cool double hyphen) to go downstairs to the ballroom to accept his seventh NASCAR Cup Series championship trophy.
As usual, The Man in Black (this night it was a black tuxedo) was spot-on.
On Friday night, for the 28th time, NASCAR will drop its shop rags and pick up champagne flutes at the world-famous digs at 301 Park Ave.
“When we first walked in there, it was like, ‘Whoa,’” says former racer and team owner Junior Johnson, who owned Darrell Waltrip’s title-winning ride at the first Waldorf awards ceremony in 1981. “I think some of those people thought we’d come in there raising hell, you know? Maybe they were expecting.....

Dale Earnhardt Jr. wins the 2008 NASCAR NMPA Chex Most Popular Driver Award, his 6th straight!
NASCAR to partner with Kevin Costner: NASCAR announced a year-long partnership with actor and director Kevin Costner that will see the Academy Award winner participate in several NASCAR initiatives, including the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards banquet, narration of a new NASCAR movie and the exclusive debut of the latest music video for Kevin Costner and Modern West on NASCAR.COM. As a long time NASCAR fan, Im very excited about this partnership, said Kevin Costner, who has starred in several sports-themed movies. They have tremendous fans, which are truly the most passionate in all of sports. Costner kicks-off the partnership with a special guest appearance at the Sprint Cup Series annual Champions Banquet at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City on December 5 (9:00pm/et on ESPN Classic). Costner narrates a special tribute to the 60th Anniversary of NASCAR. Additionally, Costner and his band, Modern West, will debut the music video for their newest single, Backyard, exclusively on NASCAR.com beginning on Monday, Dec. 8. Costner will also serve as the voice of the latest NASCAR film. The Ride of Their Lives, narrated by Costner, is a first-person account of the history and heroes of NASCAR brought to life through the men and women who lived the dream. The film includes new, exclusive interviews with famed NASCAR personalities Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jeff Gordon, Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip, and tells the story of how family dynamics weaved a thread through a half-century of racing. Produced by CMT Films and NASCAR Media Group, The Ride of Their Lives premieres Dec. 13 on CMT [9pm/et].(Rogers & Cowan PR)(12-5-2008)
Presenter: Over 20 million voted since chex became a sponsor in 2002 for the winner 1.2 million votes alone. Since it is year for election he should consider running 2012 for the white house. He changed teams, he changed sponsors, the only thing that did not change is the fans unwavering support. Dale Jr. is then introduced as the 6th consecutive mpd.
After his acceptance speech he was asked how does it feel to come and get this award and not getting in the top ten. He said it was frustrating not to have won more it was a challenge to stay focused and not get too frustrated but we worked hard and ran good which was more frustrating, have some work to do. We were not really a factor from the start and that was hard to deal with and tough to focus on each week as getting further and further behind. In 10 days he is going on vacation with his family and hunting with his uncles up until Christmas. New Years he is not sure if he is going to stay home with family or going to Rockingham to see Andy Hillenburg. Claire then said to him your fans have been working really hard to vote for you they have been calling and talking saying it is their mission what they do for you do you have anything you want to say to your fans after all of this? The very humble Jr. then said the fans have voted for others driver too. Each year we reach a milestone on how many votes, in the number of people participating in voting, gives a good idea how many fans are really passionate about the sports and how dedicated and devoted they are it’s very exciting for me to win 6 years in a row being that the fans vote on the award it’s a great feeling for someone who wins it.
Claire B asks if he is ever surprised and how much his fans do for him he said yes and he said there is a few fan site that he visited and he sees where they are really pushing each other to vote and do what they need to do to help us win “so that means a lot to me”
Rats! I don’t get classic.. Have a good one!
NEW YORK — The official awards banquet isn’t until Friday night, but that didn’t stop Jimmie Johnson from adding to his trophy collection one day early. At NASCAR’s annual Myers Brothers Media Luncheon, the three-time champion received an award for leading the most laps. He received an award for winning the most poles. His crew chief won an award, his pit crew won an award, his sponsor won an award, even one of his engine builders won an award. And Dale Earnhardt Jr. upstaged them all with one thing.
Facial hair. Lots of it. “I called him ‘Mountain Man’ when I first saw it,” Jeff Gordon said of the Grizzly Adams-like growth sported by his Henrdrick Motorsports teammate. Hey, Junior is going hunting with some of his uncles in a few days. And he had never grown a beard before.
“I figured, I’d see what happened,” Earnhardt said. “I got through the itching and I was all right.”
Besides, it’s not like the guy has to be all clean-cut for the annual year-end awards ceremony, a black-tie affair held within the refined, opulent environs of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Despite making the Chase after a one-year absence, despite winning a race to snap that 76-event winless skid, Earnhardt isn’t on the program for Friday night. His late-season swoon relegated him to 12th in the Sprint Cup standings, and only the top 10 appear on stage. Junior was in New York on Thursday to pick up his sixth consecutive most popular driver award, a trophy only Bill Elliott (16 times) and Richard Petty (nine times) have won more.
It was one of those moments when Earnhardt’s popularity and performance, not always directly proportional, stood side-by-side. Clearly, there is no driver that fans adore more. He earned 1.2 million votes in balloting for his latest most popular driver award, which was never in doubt. His value to sponsors is rock-solid even in a recessed economy. He moves merchandise and sells tickets. But even Earnhardt, smart and savvy guy that he is, realizes his on-track performance isn’t quite where many believe it should be.
“I don’t know what I’m doing to get that,” he said, sounding....
