It's deer mating season when lusting bucks recklessly run around searching for does and authorities are cautioning motorists to watch out. The state police barracks at Netcong received three calls about deer-related incidents today. In one noontime incident on I-80 eastbound in Parsippany, an antlered buck that apparently had been struck in the head by a vehicle briefly halted traffic as it stood dazed and bleeding in the center lane. State Police had no information on the injured animals fate.
The peak of the rutting season for bucks is the first three weeks of November for the northern part of the state, according to studies cited by a report for the state Department of Environmental Protection. Many wandering deer fall victim to collisions with traffic this time of the year and they are heavy enough to seriously damage vehicles, state police said.
The DEP also has sent an alert out to motorists this fall, advising them to take extra care while driving. Some suggestions include: Drive more cautiously in areas with large deer populations and near deer crossing signs; slow down when one of the animals stands of the side of a road; use high beams at night, and brake firmly and stay in a lane if it appears your vehicle may hit a deer. The DEP also advises drivers to stop and wait for a deer to leave instead of moving around it. Straying out of lane increases the chance your car may hit other traffic. Ping!
i live out in the suburbs of philadelphia. the deer are horrible this year. they’re everywhere. ive had 5 near misses just the past month and a half.
Even though I’m are in GA, this is good reminder, espically now since I can hike more. Like on the college campus I live on The deer outnumber the students eight to one, and we have had some intersting incidents with school building, cars and bucks in this time period. Espically when a buck saw his reflection in clear door, charged it, and had to be caught in our brand new science building.
A 8 point crossed the road just in front of me today on a service road in Memphis.
Now that would be an excellent topic for an FR photo thread !
Got SD film ?
I got an Nikon SLR (Wow film... I’ve done and wouldn’t want to do much more... stains your fingers to much) and access to video cameras... I’ll put something up in the next few weeks if I can (It’s hell week for the next couple weeks though sadly)(I’m sorry I’m young,
Though I always planned on making a short horror movie about this fact before I left...:D.
I had a near miss a week ago and phoned in to the State Police a car hitting a dear in front of my house today. Here in the far northern suburbs of NYC the deer are everywhere!
(remembering hellweek without fondness)
/dies laughing
Thanks. That made my day better :D.
We need more hunting !!
My son went out hunting for the first time tonight. After about an hour of sitting at the feeder, he gave up and headed home. He was almost back at the house and heard “some grunting” coming from the back yard. He slipped around the side of the house and saw two ten point bucks locked up about 15 yards from his position.
The poor kid got buck fever so bad his ears rang. Shaking, sweating... just couldn’t take the shot. It was all just *so perfect*!
For once, I didn’t jump all over him when he cussed. ;-)
I told him that it happens to most people when they get that perfect buck in their sights for the very first time.
I’m sure he’ll calm down. We’ll be eating venison by this weekend.
Heheheh A very good story :)
