A deer hunter became a hero on opening day after he rescued a man who was stuck up to his chest in muddy water in Sherburne County.
According to officials, 60-year-old Peter Schmidt, of Orrock Township, saved the life of a hunter from Big Lake.
Schmidt heard 26-year-old Matthew Capko yelling from inside the National Wildlife Refuge.
"I wasn't paying attention to where I was going and walked into a bog," Capko said. "It was kind of like quicksand."
Stuck waist-deep, Capko realized his cell phone was too wet to use. He fired off a couple of shotgun rounds in the air that apparently no one heard. About an hour passed and Capko couldn't feel his legs. Then, up on the hill, he saw his ex-father-in-law Schmidt.
Schmidt had his cell phone on him and called for help. Capko was trapped for an hour in the cold water before crews were able to pull him out.
Both hunters went to the hospital to be treated for hypothermia.

Young Capko is a lucky feller.
Many years ago, I got turned around in a cedar swamp and before I knew it, I was in a bog, half way to my knees....
I pulled out, but lost both boots in the process.
I finally walked out, barefoot, cold and thankful!
Strange story. I’m glad it had a happy ending. It’s one of those things that you can laugh about afterward but it could have been not so funny too.

When hunting, you should always carry one of those long hollow reeds with you. That way, If you get sucked into some quicksand, you’ll still be able to breathe- just like in the movies.

Well I know what my uncle did when my father got into quick sand when they were fishing years ago. Dad was in nearly to the waist by the time my uncle realized what was going on. The bayou edged the hay field which is where the horses were. A rope around Dad under the shoulders and gentle working with the horse got Dad out.
For whatever reason, I was struck by the stuck hunter being 26 years old and already having an ex-father in law.
The real question is how many Al Franken votes did the unionized rescue crew find at the bottom of the bog when they pulled the hunter out?
Stuck in a bog. Two hours(?)waist deep. Hypothermia. Damaged goods?
