I just "picked up" an astronaut...

Posted on 11/14/2008 8:54:21 AM PST by FL_Native

I was out smoking a cigarette and an astronaut just happened to be walking by (I work at KSC). She stopped and we introduced ourselves, she is one of the latest graduates of astronaut candidate training, clas of 2004. We started chatting about what we do and I asked her if she'd like to take a quick tour of our facility (we make the heat tiles for the shuttle). I got to give her a short tour and show her what I do, she seemed very interested. It was so cool, her name is Dottie Metcalf-Lindenbuger. She hasn't flown yet and is not on the schedule, but it was still an honor. These people are the rock stars of my industry.

They’re a lot easier to pick up in orbit.

A tour of your facility equals “picked up”?

Nice that you got to meet her though.

Are you going to ask her out?

If not, can I have her telephone number?!

Dude - did you get her number?

Seriously.

You don't let an opportunity like that pass without showing some serious game.

Thanks you too..

He looks familiar, we have astronauts come through occasionally. I have met Jose Hernandez (further down on page). But this was the first time I just started chatting with one and was able to give her a personal tour.

I think the hyphenated name is a dead giveaway she’s taken.

I got to meet James McDivitt several times as a kid. My grandfather and he used to do business together.

That’s why I put it in quotes. But it is the first time I have just been able to just chat with an astronaut and give them an informal tour, just chatting about what we do.

Many many years ago when I was a poor student, I used to wait tables at a Southeast Houston (Clear Lake) restaurant few miles from JSC. I can proudly say I have served a few astronauts myself. (The late) Kalpana Chawla used to be a regular. Though I never met her or waited on her I knew her husband, who is English, quite well.

Mine too! Hyphenators are a pain the butt when it comes to data storage. Always complaining a search never renders their husband’s last name. We live in patriarchal society so pick ONE man’s last name already.

Astronauts are awesome! Today we are celebrating Fred Haise Day in honor of the Apollo 13 astronaut and Biloxi, MS native’s 75th Birthday. Check this out if you’d need a gift idea for him: http://www.sunherald.com/pageone/story/944724.html

I read KSC to be KFC.

There are not chickens at KSC.
