Everyone has their opinion on what he should have done, but in this case, I think you are right.

I think he didn't want to ruffle any Democrats' feathers so that he'd be welcomed back into the Senate. In other words, he was preparing for a loss, and not to win. Can't win unless you give 100%.

That would have started a fight that needs to be fought. The opposition would have called that line of thinking "racist", and he didn't have the guts to fight that fight. What could he lose? The minority vote? Now we not only have an affirmative action economic disaster, we have an affirmative action president to insure that the root of the problem is never corrected.
