You already have to register when you buy a gun. I bought one in 1977 the day Carter was sworn in and had to give an I.D. Several years later the ATF contacted me and wanted to know who I sold it to. It had been used in a crime. Funny thing is I sold it to a cop. Guess he sold it to a crook.

Just recently bought a rifle and had to register and my info was run through NCIS.

The store clerk told me the same thing about ammo. He can’t keep it on the shelf.

“You already have to register when you buy a gun.”

Well, you are partially correct. You can still buy a gun from or sell a gun to an individual such as your neighbor without registering it or performing any other paperwork. Additionally, there are many guns possessed by individuals that were inherited or bought and sold prior to ATF documentation was required and thereby have no paper trail attached to them. Consequently, the ATF has no knowledge of this sizeable inventory. Btw, now you know the “real” reason the anti-gunners have been wanting to make it illegal for non FFL transactions at gun shows. If it should become illegal for an individual to take a firearm to a gun sale and walk around and sell it, then it's not a stretch to make it illegal for all gun sales between individuals, even standing in your driveway with your neighbor.
