Like the other posters said, tell her to prove how wonderful it is by giving all her possessions to others “for the common good.”
Then, offer to buy her a one way ticket to the socialist paradise Cuba.
I’ve just gotten to the part where all is being explained to Dagny. (I’ll leave it at that so I don’t give anything away to someone who hasn’t read it yet.)
I can only wonder what people thought when the book was written. Did it seem like quite a stretch or could some see us headed in this direction even then? It certainly isn’t a stretch now! I’m seeing amazing parallels throughout the entire book.
ANIMAL FARM is anti-Stalin but not anti-socialist. Trotsky is the hero.
Remember too that the farm became more productive than ever after the humans were run off which was not true at any point in the 1919 to 1224 era of the Soviet Union.
...make that 1924.
Do you have any idea where that video can be purchased (video takes forever on dialup)?
But, one can not protect the system from the “cult of personality”. (I’m certain some one might think that maybe if we turn the system over to a computer, they might eliminate the human factor. But that is scifi stuff we need not worry about for the time being.)
(BTW-I chose Animal Farm because I was quickly trying to think of something that might be read quickly. Something like Atlas Shrugged can be an undertaking.)
In the end, socialism fails because it flies in the face of human nature.
Have you also read "The Mainspring of Human Progress" by her and Henry Grady Weaver?
Someone should publish a slim book that deals just with the section about the "static motor" and its inventor. I have this section bookmarked in my copy and I have had dozens of people read it. I find it to be very convincing.
If you like I will burn it to DVD for ya and ship it. My nickel! Send me a freepmail if you are interested. It’s one year since I was Mr. dial-up so I know your challenges.
Frederic Bastiat’s “The Law” available by searching Google online in its entirety. Easy to read, easy to understand. Of course, someone recently posted a papal encyclical about the evils of socialism as well, right here at freerepublic.com and that was reaffirmed by the last pope. Listing USSR, Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and others as reasons why it doesn’t work probably won’t convince anymore. It’s been too long since the people have actually seen the effects. It sounds so seductively sweet to share the wealth, but it’s an evil trap. You cannot use the law to take from some for the benefit of others without committing a wrong, and there is no right way to do a wrong thing.
