Doesn't sound like that was enough to make sure he was dead and gone.

It sounds rather like the ancient Celtic “threefold death” used in ritual sacrifice.

The victims were first strangled, then stabbed and then finally drowned.

Google “bog people” to check it out.

In Braveheart, that is why Wallace died the way he did.
