Science journalist Pamela Weintraub covers this ground in Cure Unknown, a meticulous account of the history of Lyme Disease and the continuing failure of the medical establishment to adequately address the growing epidemic; particularly interesting because she, her husband and two young sons were struck down with Lyme (and related spirochetes) after moving to a semi-rural suburb in New York in the mid-90s.
The book made me re-think the precautions I take when hiking, especially since some chronic and increasingly debilitating variants of Lyme Disease may not be curable.
