I own a S&W 357 (Long, freakin' barreled handgun) that can not be carried around at all, it's too long. I got it from my grandfather, when he passed!
I own a Walther PPK, I sold my P99 recently. But I decided to go in to a dealer today, just to see something new with some more stopping power than the PPK. They tried to sell me on a Glock 19 (which I liked alot actually). I went and shot it, in the shooting range, and I would like to get your honest opinion on that gun!
I want something with some stopping power, than a PPK. I know the PPK will not give me the stopping power I need, so I will ask you, and hope you can give me some honest responses on a Glock 19. What do you think?
Is the Glock 19 a great gun?
I want a really good reliable handgun for myself with some stopping power, beside the PPK.
Glock 19 - Good Gun??

You want something fairly small but you don’t want a sub-compact?
“Personally, if youre in the market for a new carry piece, Id look towards the compact .45s. “
Unfortunately, many will have a hard time getting usable shot placement with compacts in a .45 unless they spend a lot of time on the range perfecting their grip. I think a medium caliber weapon loaded with self defense rounds is the best all around gun for the most people. Easier to carry, easier to conceal, easier to control. For the minority who find that can reliably handle a small frame .45 under stress, then I have no problem recommending it.
Exactly. That’s why I don’t buy Glocks. Besides, life’s too short to have an ugly gun.
I carry a Desert Eagle Baby 9 and/or a Colt Pony, but anything Glock is good, they’re excellent pistols. And a heck of a lot easier to carry than that long barreled S&W. Just get used to the trigger safety.
“Simple stopping power!”
It isn’t that simple.
And yet you post about the XD compacts...
They don’t make them any uglier than that. And yes, I have an XD-9 subcompact...
Don’t worry about stopping power. A modern 9mm defensive round (Gold Dot, Ranger etc) will do the job.
Keep in mind that the US military cannot use rounds like these and that is why they want to move back to the 45. They are stuck with FMJ rounds which do not perform well - little to no expansion.
I guess I’ll be a proud owner of a G19 tomorrow!
Thank you all. I was always kinda leaning that way after today, but I just wanted a real honest opinion from some really good folk.
Trust me, I’ve done alot of research on this....
Excellent gun, you might consider a Glock 22 in .40 caliber
a bit heavier hitting..
He wanted a Glock so I steered him to the new and improved models from an American Company.
I then said I don’t buy Glocks because of the two reasons I gave. I do have a really ugly gun but it has so much weirdness to it, I love it. It’s on my home page. You should be able to pick it out.
“So overall, its a good gun, in your opinion?”
Like I said, I wouldn’t carry one, but you’re not me. You have to decide what you want out of the gun and then choose your load and become proficient with it. Your opinion may change in a year and go back to a gun that is easier to carry.
The 19 is a fantastic gun.
It is exactly the same size as a Glock 23, not bigger.
Stopping power is another subject altogether. IMO, most of the pistol calibers are actually ballistically very close to each other. When you see the difference in ballistics between a rifle caliber (even the much maligned 5.56 NATO) and any pisto caliber, you will quickly realize how silly the pistol caliber debate is.
I’ve owned both a PPKs and a Glock 19 (among dozens of others). The Glock is a far superior weapon.
Good luck!
Trust me, I’m not getting rid of my PPK whatsoever.
I just wanted something else, like a 9mm.
Thank you all, trust me, I do appreciate it!
You are a 1911 fan, so as far as I’m concerned we are friends, but I don’t see my name in your ping list...
What is up with that? I’ve been around here a LONG time...
The only names on that ping list are the ones who either posted on the Free Republic gun club threads or asked to be included.
I love my Glock 23. I never leave home without it!
Glock #26, 9mm 135 grain hollow point, 12 round mag, very concealable.
I have a couple of GROCKS......great guns....I also have a ruger, two brownings, a S&W, Beretta 9000S (Dont ever buy one of these unless you have terribly small hands) and my newest favorite is the Springfield XD .40 Sub Compact.
Fits my hand like a glove. I suggest finding a handgun which fits your hand best. Marriage has put a crimp on the purchasing of “NEW” handguns. Lets hope Barack HUSSEIN OSAMMA does not try to compound the issue.
Actually the Armorer suggests that the Walther has considerably more stopping power than the Beretta, especially when you add in a silencer. The Beretta is a fine ladies gun, but the Walther is used by the FBI and CIA. M insists that if you wish to stay in the double O section that you use the Walther. Sorry. Couldn't resist.
Besides, after reading SOF review, it was nice to know that I could freeze it, bury it in the back yard for 6 months and it'll still fire after a good cleaning. :oP After all, when it's time to go Red Dawn, you never know when those facts would come in handy. /h
