I think McCain can save himself in this regard by opposing and further bailouts. He can rightfully say that the bailout has not had the intended consequences and that more time must be allowed for the first bailout to work it’s way through the system.

It is too late for that. The entire press will only cry WAFFLE and FLIP-FLOP and doesn’t know what he’s talking about and that is all the voters will hear. He should do it anyway but there is no benefit in it now.
