I am addicted to political news.I say that in all seriousness.

I used to be, and November 2006 cured me.

Now I can hardly watch news or read a regular paper. I catch it all in its reflection on FR and other Internet sites. The DriveByMedia makes me too insane...

Congratulations. I sure hope you maintain. It’s been 18+ years for me, and I have 0% temptation to drink.

This is great, great news and yes you deserve the congratulations! My mom had a very hard time of it for years and years, addicted to smoking also - we lost her in 1986. She was 61. We have one brother who has various addiction issues (tell me not to loan him $). I rarely drink and when I do I’m ready to sleep, but I had enough episodes in college to concern me! so Congratulations! to both of you and all who posted here with their good news.

A year ago, I spent a weekend with a guy who had quit drinking two weeks earlier after 5 years of hard drinking and he was still drunk.

That scared me. How can anyone get in that kind of shape where it takes them weeks to sober up completely? I saw him a week after that and he was a new man. That third week did the trick.

A doctor once told me that it is really hard to drink yourself to death. The vast majority of alcoholics die from accidents or they get killed by someone long before the health problems get really bad.

My God bless you, others who have overcome the addiction to alcohol, and especially those who need victory over that and any other substance. My prayer goes out to all of you.

I’ll step up and say that I believe I am one of the dozen who got some initial help and encouragement from the list.

As I recall, the question was, do you REALLY want to quit?

Seems like a simple question and a no-brainer, but it took quite a few AA meetings until I was able to answer in the affirmative. And I learned that I can make the decision not to drink one day at a time, each and every day. I do not think about never, ever drinking again. If I think about a drink, I choose to wait until tomorrow and see how I feel then.

Will have two years on 11-11. Thanks Rob for having the courage to stand up. You are THE MAN!

And FR is a amazaing place where such miracles can happen. Certainly worthy of our financial support.

As I recall, the question was, do you REALLY want to quit?

That was, and still is, the MOST important question. There are others, but none as important as that simple question...

I am real happy for you don-o...

Another day of living. God’s blessings to you and to all who have shared in your comeback. May 1, 1993 was when I started living again.

You may have seen some of my posts on FR.
I’ll grant you on occasions Ive posted about getting bladdered for a laugh, but lately I found that it has been better leaving it alone.
You may or may not know that rural England has a growing drink problem, in the town just down the road from here police had to break up a fight in the Market Square involving about twenty 13 or 14 year old kids (last Friday).
I just got back from New York on Monday; a week long trip that I managed to pay for by staying off the booze.

Keep on trudging the road of happy destiny, Rob.

September 6, 1981 for me. Just last week I was diagnosed with diabetes and I shudder to think the disaster my life would have been had I been drinking all those years. I've always maintained that alcoholism is a blood-sugar condition closely related to diabetes (that you often find both in the same family). Now here I am, living proof! Thank you God.

These days it's a real danger to a fellowship.

Undoubtedly true in many cases, but this guy and I have been in business for 34 years-- 4 he was drunk and 30 sober-- and I knocked back a few myself back then. We've been living out of the same money pot, so to speak for all that time and never had a cross word. Not even one.

As far as politics is concerned, he knows how I think. I can't do anything about him. I suspect he was brainwashed by his moonbat wife some years ago.

Oh, I get his solicitation letters from the ACLU and shred them before he sees them-- and stuff like that. But if he suspects anything, he's never mentioned it.

I wasn’t talking about your relationship with your partner, but rather mixing 12-step fellowships and politics.

I should reread your original thread to see how much I harrassed you.

I vaguely remember it.

Very blessed by your excellent progress these 5 years.

CONGRATS.

And thanks for the ping list, too.

God’s best to you and all those you love.

Way to go!

Alcohol is/was not an issue for me, but I celebrated 5 years of freedom from my own addiction in September.
