Mighty Mice Guns

Ruger’s Two New Defensive Handgun Concepts

. . . First, they introduced an established revolver in a new caliber, the SP101 chambered for ATK’s new .327 Federal Magnum cartridge. Then, hitting the 2008 SHOT Show a little like Godzilla hitting Tokyo, came the LCP — a tiny, sub-10-ounce .380 ACP autoloader whose acronymized name stands for Lightweight Compact Pistol. By the time the show closed, Ruger had taken orders for 87,000 LCPs, such a figure is, to the best of my knowledge, a record in non-military firearms. Since the little one made the biggest splash, by far, we’ll start there

A guy next to me at the range Saturday was shooting the Ruger .380, and maybe it was just him, but at 5-yards the target looked like he was shooting with a shotgun at 25-yards. He seemed to do ok with other calibers, but the .380 pattern was pretty poor. He said it was the first time he had shot it...still?

I would think a 10 ounce .380 would have vicious recoil especially since the grips would be small.

I have a Browning .380 and large hands. Don’t have any problem getting good groups at 5 yards.

That was my observation...his recoil was a lot more pronounced than my Sig .40 S&W. If you go to Ruger’s web page they have a link to a demo video of the .380 and a demo of it being fired. The recoil was the first thing I noticed.

My thinking on the .380 is, do I really need another caliber?? Same with the Ruger .327
Mag...geez, I’ve got 9mm, .40S&W, .357Mag, 357Sig, .38, .45ACP and at least 3 calibers of .22. That’s all I need is another caliber.

My favorite is my Kel-Tec P3AT, an 8 ounce .380 that predates the LCP by a couple of years.

I also have a S&W 632 J Frame that nearly qualifies, and a Beretta Minx in .22 short that pretty much defines the term.

All have uses, the Kel-Tec is a BUG / truck gun / sometime carry, the S&W is what I take into the woods in these parts with snake shot for the first two rounds and the Minx has been used to dispatch sick or injured animals.

I checked out the Ruger LCP, but I settled on this one instead:

It's just a tad larger, and it's got that legendary Sig engineering.

Oh come on, you can always use another caliber. Interesting to me is that Browning's favorite gun according to his biography was the little .32 auto.

His brother Matt said John once surprised them by pulling an extremely fast quick draw with the .32. He had apparently been practicing.

I actually have a somewhat rare Browning 9mm, in firing condition, that my father brought home from Nazi Germany.

Both of these things look cute. I wonder if they’ll make them in pink. I bet my girls would like one of each, all three of them... OUCH! That is definitely going to leave a mark on my wallet!

I had one of the first SP101s in .357mag back in the early, early 1990s.

I wish I’d never sold it.
