MIAMI — Evel Knievel never denied his scrapes with the law — the late motorcycle daredevil often reveled in them. But even he objected to a 1970s FBI investigation of whether he was involved in a string of beatings.

According to documents obtained by The Associated Press, the federal government came close to charging Knievel, who in turn threatened to sue the FBI for alleging he was connected to a crime syndicate.

His most well-known run-in with the law was a 1977 attack on movie studio executive Shelly Saltman, whom the daredevil beat with a baseball bat in the parking lot of 20th Century Fox.

Saltman promoted Knievel's infamous attempt to jump Idaho's Snake River Canyon and then wrote a book about the experience, angering Knievel by portraying him as "an alcoholic, a pill addict, an anti-Semite and an immoral person."

The article only proves that the FBI kept an eye on Evel, but I fail to see any proof of a “dark side”. More AP BS.

I’m not even sure there was a point to the article other than an attempt to bash a dead man.

Robert Craig Knievel is no longer within the jurisdiction of the FBI, or any other law enforcement organization, so it really doesn’t matter.

I think it's pretty obvious that if the FBI has cards on you, they play them. Hell, sometimes they play cards they don't even have.

Daredevil Evel Knievel and his son and fellow daredevil Robbie Knievel embrace at the top of the landing ramp prior to Robbie's successful 180-ft jump during the fifth annual Evel Knievel Days in Butte, Mont., in this July 28, 2006, file photo. Knievel, left, the hard-living motorcycle daredevil whose exploits made him an international icon in the 1970s, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2007. He was 69.

Actually, this just sounds like some reporter abusing the Freedom Of Information Act. Too bad AP doesn't spend some time pursuing dirt on Obama.

“an alcoholic, a pill addict, an anti-Semite and an immoral person.”

Sounds like any number of actors from Hollywood.

Perhaps you missed this part of the article:

His most well-known run-in with the law was a 1977 attack on movie studio executive Shelly Saltman, whom the daredevil beat with a baseball bat in the parking lot of 20th Century Fox. Saltman promoted Knievel's infamous attempt to jump Idaho's Snake River Canyon and then wrote a book about the experience, angering Knievel by portraying him as "an alcoholic, a pill addict, an anti-Semite and an immoral person."

SEems pretty suggestive of a dark side to me, but perhaps our frames of reference are different, and drug and alcohol addicted people who assault others with a baseball bat are not expressing their "dark side".

I don’t see where the FBI would care, let alone have jurisdiction, in any assault case.

To my knowledge, no one has ever proved EK to be a drug user. And the reason Saltman got busted up was because he wrote a book which, according to EK, contained lies about him and his family. Saltman was a tool of Bob Arum, so I guess it's a case of pick your scumbag. Plus, this is an AP story. Use it as fact at your own peril.

But if you think the FBI is some beacon of virtue, consider Richard Jewel.
