IRRC the horses were killed in the battle of Jutland and were washing up on shore.The Battle of Jutland was a naval battle fought in 1916, and I think the book is about World War II. But I can't find it online. I'll have to work up the courage to check it out of a library.

I think he inferred or said that the horses were on a transport ship that was sunk not too far from shore. WW II had no such incidents.
