If McCain switches his vote, he will not only be accused of flip-flopping, but he will also be the prime target of the public's anger in the coming weeks. It would be political suicide.
Listen, John McCain knew what he was doing when he came out in support of this bill. He was right about Comprehensive Immigration Reform and he is right about this. He was several moves ahead of everyone else on this issue as he was with CIR. He realizes that the public mood will shift dangerously against those who do not support CER in the coming weeks. The man is simply a brilliant thinker.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of his Republican colleagues in the House. Their refusal to back both McCain and Bush on CER will be used by the liberal media in casting a poor reflection on McCain's leadership abilities. This is the time for McCain to play up his maverick image and work with Dems in passing CER. Anything less and it's Game Over.
