Have House Republicans stepped into a Democrat trap?

Posted on 09/29/2008 7:39:35 PM PDT by robert david

It is my belief that Republicans in the House have committed a major blunder by voting against today's bailout plan. They have given the Democrats a very large club to batter them with over the next six weeks before the election as the stock market crashes and the economy goes into a tailspin. It is my fear that this will lead to a Democrat landslide in the House and Senate and may even cost John McCain the presidency as Democrats and their big media cohorts blame the Republicans for the crisis.

Republican Representatives should have heeded the words of their leadership under President George Bush and Senator John McCain instead of caving to pressure from their constituents on a subject they do not fully comprehend.Today is a perfect example why the Founders of this country instituted a representative democracy instead of a direct democracy.

The failure of Congress to pass this emergency plan will also be used by the Democrats to paint a picture of Senator McCain and the President as men who are incapable of providing the leadership required to pass even the most important of legislation.

There may not be any way to save the skin of Republicans in the House who are up for reelection, but if we act now and urge our Congressman to support comprehensive economic reform, we may be able to insure the election of John McCain. Anything less, and we could very well be witnessing an Obama presidency, something our country may never recover from.

God, save our country.

ANOTHER DAY OR TWO OF ECONOMIC CARNAGE (WITH NO ACTION FROM CONGRESS) AND THESE NUMBERS WILL BECOME VERY UGLY VERY FAST FOR REPUBLICANS.

If you are correct and the American public becomes very supportive of this socialist scheme and faults congress for the failure, the majority party should be held accountable.

If the Dems are allowed to pin the financial crises on Republicans, we deserve defeat.

OK A) I do not trust these polls. ANY of them. They don't ring true, they have no credibility. and B) I cannot for the life of me, accept or believe that people would turn on Republicans because they failed to nationalize our entire financial structure, and give the keys to our money to those that caused it! All that and give to White House to Obama? He is clueless about the economy. Granted there are some who are ignorant, but enough to get him in office, I don't believe that.

House republicans, and democrats who were more loyal to their constituents than to big money lobbyists did the sensible thing

Because there are billions of dollars of real estate out there that are worth a fraction of the value it is claimed as.

Empty malls with no buyers, and McMansions with no market.

And the fat cats were going to squirm out from under it using this bill as leverage to buy time Someone is going to be left holding a whole lot of bags. Let it be the lenders - who knew what they were doing, and did it anyway.

I agree McCain needs to wake up, BUT, he needs to place this fiasco right in the laps in belongs in! And FAST! This business of vote for this bill or lose the election, is more un American than the bill is, and that's pretty anti American.

When did America stop standing for Freedom for the love of God?

The premise of your question is wrong. The market will not crash. Have some faith in capitalism.

Ummm, corrections and recessions are normal. No one knows if this would have helped anyway. It's cheaper to lose money in the stock market than support Socialists.

Many Dims voted against this for very different reasons . If the Republicans play this right , they could very well recapture the house . McCain will have to put aside the Bi-Partisan B.S. and lead the party onto victory .

If there ever was a mess tailor made for McCain , this is it . Why is he not beating this with a bat ? Newt’s idea should be applied heavily to this mess .

Agree with Dick Morris on Hannity & Colmes that McCain blew this big time. He had the opportunity to fashion and present something diametrically opposed to the trash that went up for the vote today and he didn't. What a wasted opportunity. And he's let Obama/Pelosi and the rest of the dimwits blame this on the Republicans for "lack of regulation", etc. Instead of hitting back on the FM&FM Dim connection. Hannity did a really nice exposure of it this evening.

I agree we need to do something NOW.

Dems will kill us in a few weeks if this isn’t fixed, so we need to present a new plan this week.

Damn it, we need a new contract with America.

Why the hell not? McCain needs to get a plan out there NOW.

There were problems with this bill, but we need to do something as soon as possible.

Honestly if Obama wins this, I will believe that we are truly VERY near the end times....so I am thinking McCain will win if it is God’s will. Face it, Obama is NOT a friend to Israel though he deceives them and tries to make them think he is for Jewish votes, and the Bible says God will protect Israel, we need a President that will do that, I don’t think Obama fills that bill.

I am expecting the people to fully embrace Socialist solutions to the pending collapse of the economy -- which will of course make a terrible situation even worse.

Ain't enough $$$ for socialist solutions

We are mortgaged to the hilt--even Obama said his programs would have to wait

Bull Pucky! It's the JOB of a REPRESENTATIVE to "cave" to his CONSTITUENTS. What kind of elitist drivel is that? We, the Constituents, comprehend plenty. Read the bill! It isn't difficult to understand in the least. In fact, I'd bet the average tax payer after reading it sees "red", literally and figuratively.

I couldn't agree more.

Heck I know a LOT of black Americans, and they can't stand the O. They admit they probably would have voted for Hillery, but will not for the O. And I don't see many admitting that to a pollster on the phone. I also have a very devoted union democrat for a brother in law, he is not voting for O.

House prices doing fine here too, but in a lot of areas, they NEED to come down, way down! As it is we have low income folks getting these faulty junk mortgages on 400,000. to 600,000. houses! Those houses shouldn’t be priced any higher than 125,00. The housing bubble was bound to burst sooner or later, and we all knew it. So did Wall Street. I begged my sister not to buy her house, they are bound to end up with a mortgage they owe more on than the house is worth.

The bailout plan was opposed by about 50% of the public as of today. After the stock market crashes and Americans realize just how serious our economic situation is that will change dramatically and to Obama and the Dems benefit with plenty of help from their friends in the drive-by media. This whole fiasco could not have come at a worse time.

House Republicans should have followed the lead of John McCain and George Bush instead of going for what seemed at the time the path of least resistance in regards to the voters. Now we will have to do some serious triage in order to save John McCain's presidential run.

Considering the gravity of the situation, I see McCain as having no choice but to publicly admonish the Republicans in Congress who voted against this bill in the hopes of distancing himself from the anger that will be visited upon them over the next several weeks. McCain is known for being a maverick so he may just be able to pull it off.
