Watching the cruelty that the press has extended to W. Bush has caused me to re-think about the most important trait that a President should possess. It is the ability to still continue to do what is right while knowing that people hate you. I don't think that any President (other than Lincoln) has had to endure the indignity that Bush has had to suffer. Perhaps Nixon, but so much of his was created by his own demons. Lincoln, too, had half of the country hating him but he continued to do what he thought was right, and continued to his death to grow in his vision of what was right and wrong. George W. Bush did not start off as a nation-builder but ended up being a democracy builder. And, the fact that we have not been attacked for seven years should be a reminder that an adult is in the White House. He's made mistakes, but he's done more right than wrong. He warned us about this potential financial crisis in 2005 (and what mocked accordingly by the likes of fancy-pants Barney Frank) and Bush's clarion call for Social Security reform will come back yet and haunt us.

Obama cannot even admit that he was wrong about the surge. Obama thinks that he is NEVER wrong. The smiling joy that he showed on Friday's debate when he said, "When I'm President" reminded me of kids being "King of the Hill." Does he have the character, moral fortitude and plain-old relationship with God that would sustain him through the kind of rejection that Bush has endured? Would he break psychologically and do really dumb(er) stuff or could he hold it together with the same poise that has been shown by Bush 42

Guess it's a moot point--the press would never crucify Obama the way it has Bush. Bush has relived the Passion Week every week but for Obama, everyday would be Palm Sunday.

MHT...nice to see you and Hildy on these threads....there have been so many "newbies" that I thought we old timers had been run off....

the qualities you mention....think of what a great vice president and perhaps president Sarah Palin will make....even tempered, not getting outwardly angry, being the good soldier....

McCain is going to win....so everybody, we can cry our tears but I just think he is going to pull it off.....

You are right and I feel chastised. Earlier on another thread, I lashed out at Bush over this bailout and for the first time in 8 years doubted his capability to be president. I needed the reminder of all the good hes done and what a decent human being he is. This thread has been good for many of us to quell the mass hysteria that has been building this week.
