MOSCOW -- No matter how powerful the Russian government may appear nowadays, it hasn't been able to quell nostalgia for some of the country's most brutal leaders.
Dictator Josef Stalin made the final cut Wednesday in a Kremlin-backed contest to identify Russia's most significant historical figure, though he was stripped of almost one million votes organizers called "illegal."
The "Name of Russia" contest is part of a broad effort by the Kremlin and state media to strengthen national pride, drawing on Russia's Soviet and Czarist past. But the campaign has turned into a political minefield.

The nostalgia is truly amazing, and I attribute it to their education system.
I have heard conservative, Christian, Russians, who are now naturalized U.S. citizens, defend Stalin.
Well, I know Obama is running ahead in the polls but . . . oops, wrong thread.
As for Stalin, the young Stalin has possibilities for replacing Che on ignorant youngsters' T-shirts. We may one day see this image on DemocraticUnderground.
Well, you know, he probably wasn’t really evil, just misunderstood.
If the Germans ran a poll and Hitler was on top their would be all kinds of outrage.
Its called brainwashing for generations. See China & Mao; NK etc...
He was evil, but a worthy evil person. Hard-working and talented politican. Strongly believed in Communism, which was evil itself and Stalin didn’t stop at anything to promote it. The final goal - heaven on the Earth - seemed to justify everything.
Stalin killed only 30 or 40 million people, so why all this bickering and fussing? Uncle Joe was a great guy!
Stalin didn't believe in anything but Stalin. Trotsky was the true believer and Stalin had him offed.
Stalin was very ascetic in his personal life and worked too much. I doubt it could be connected to the motivation you think he had.
Are you ready to defend the figures?
“Are you ready to defend the figures?”
I read them in Solzhenitsyn’s “Gulag Archipeligo”. Please complain to him! If I said Stalin killed *only* 10 - 20 million, would you be happy with the figures?
