Why didn't you just tell your buddy Shaun that he was wrong? My Lab spends hours on end just looking up in the trees waiting for the squirrels to make one misstep. ;-) She also watches the jets heading into the airport.

Heck, both the lab and the mini-dachshund (especially the mini-d) will sit patiently at my feet looking up at me as I stand at the kitchen counter making a nice fat sandwich on a Saturday afternoon.

I’ve heard that in relation to guard dogs. If you get up over their heads and stay quiet and inconspicuous they may not notice you.
