HOUSTON (Reuters) - The men gather early on street corners here in storm-battered Houston, ready for the jobs they know will come their way, sweeping up broken glass and clearing downed trees and debris from city streets.
They speak mostly Spanish, while looking warily at strangers. And these undocumented, also called illegal, immigrants worry that instead of a job and a day's wages, they might instead find themselves arrested and deported.
Indeed, in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, which left a trail of destruction across southeast Texas, America's ongoing debate over U.S. immigration policy is again aflame.
On the one hand, the undocumented in the United States -- an estimated 12 million mostly Hispanic individuals -- are seen by some as a needed labor source, particularly after disasters like Ike turn communities to ruin. But many see the group as a drag on government resources who take jobs from Americans and deserve no assistance.

“The illegals I’ve seen in my neck of the woods drive brand new trucks and dress nicely too.”
That’s not the majority of them, not by a long shot. You might be confusing citizens and people with green cards that have been here a long time and have decent jobs with illegal aliens. Just because they look Mexican does not mean they are illegal aliens. There are an awful lot of Hispanic citizens and those with some sort of legal status who are allowed to work and who have been here a long time and who are making decent money. I live in a pretty small town and every month over a hundred people swear in as citizens here and the majority are Mexican or Central Americans.
This crap about Americans not being able to do anything like building a house is at least partially true but as with so many other things it’s the fault of government.
It’s a rare American who has the knowledge and licensing to build a house according to the rainbow of regulations that have to be followed. This leaves us at the mercy of an army of contractors who may or may not be ethical enough to obey the law.
I would like to put in a permanent dock on my shoreline here. Looking at doing it myself I found that I could do it for a little over $1000. Unfortunately I had to file blueprints with the army corps of engineers, and the DEQ. Naturally it didn’t meet regulations and safety standards. Basically they told me that I should seek a licensed contractor. I shopped around and found that I could have it done for $7000 and up.
I’ve got a rickety aluminium dock that I have to put in every spring and take out in the fall.
Also, hiring illegals still wouldn't pass the requirements.
You are right about the ridiculous regulations. When I built my house ten years ago it cost me a lot less just for permitting than it would today. I did all the electrical, plumbing and various other parts of the house.
I hear in parts of CA home building permits can be as much as $50K. That's absurd.
Wrong. Americans can and will work, if they can. The damage caused by Ike is a case in point. Before the rains had even stopped Saturday morning, half our neighborhood was already buzzing with activity as people cleaned up trees and branches from their own yards.

Build it so that you can unbolt half a dozen straps, put a couple of rods (or logs) under it, attach wheels and tow it up out of the water. If you build it onshore and roll it into the water, you’ll know exactly what to do to tow it back onto land.
That’ll make it difficult for anyone to declare it as a permant structure.
Oh please.
I distinctly remember that skilled Americans from all over the country showed up in Louisiana to help with the recovery from Katrina and they lost the construction jobs (some of whom were electricians even) and were sent home when the illegal aliens showed up and stole them at lower wages.
What’s more, the cleanup was being done with rakes and brooms. Now I am hearing the sound of useless leaf blowers again (that just blow the debris into someone else’s space).
Half of Ferttita’s work force left?
When Alicia hit in ‘83 my ex worked at Jimmie Walkers. The male staff and some of the illegals helped the contractors rebuild the interior of JW’s and the Flying Dutchman.
"You typical white grandma type racists just guzzle beer while you cling to your Bibles, clutch your guns, and discriminate against people not born in the United States."
Oh, ok. That's even better.
quote:
Mexicans do work that no one else wants. What can you do to change that? Nothing.”
Hmmm. Are you Robo-poster ? Or do always just regurgitate
the same empty rhetoric published by the businesses (big and small) that profit from sub-standard wages and no payroll ?
I do know illegals personally. They do not come here to do sh*t work for pennies. They come here hoping for amnesty.
They pay for a false ID and SS, work in a job until they
into a better one (yours). They are having massive credit problems but don’t worry, the false ID will protect their true identity so they will not have to pay their debtors- you will.
ILLEGALS do not want to integrate, that is why they celebrate Mexico every chance they get. The same Mexico that kicked them to the curb.
The son of One of the LEGAL Mexican immigrants who I am friends with said about illegals: “...there are too many here, we don’t want anymore.”
I could say much more but time to sign off. Later Mr. Robo.
